Tytle connects you with chartered tax advisors who specialize in Portuguese tax law for expats. We handle your IRS Modelo 3 filing, Anexo J (foreign income), treaty benefits, and special regimes like IFICI and IRS Jovem. The entire process is digital — you fill out a smart questionnaire, upload documents in your dashboard, and your advisor takes care of the rest.
We offer complete IRS Modelo 3 tax return preparation (including Anexo A, G, J, and others), tax residency analysis, NHR/IFICI regime applications, freelancer registration and compliance (atividade aberta, recibos verdes, IVA), bookkeeping, and strategic tax planning for expats with cross-border income. We also help with NIF registration and social security obligations.
Yes — that’s exactly what we specialize in. We assign your case to advisors familiar with both Portuguese tax law and the tax rules of your home country. They coordinate to apply treaty benefits and ensure you’re not taxed twice on the same income. Portugal has tax treaties with over 70 countries.
Yes. We help freelancers open their atividade (business activity) with the Finanças, set up recibos verdes (green receipts), handle quarterly IVA (VAT) returns, and file your annual IRS Modelo 3 with the correct anexos. We also advise on the simplified regime vs. organized accounting and ensure your social security contributions are correct.
As a tax resident in Portugal, you must file an annual IRS Modelo 3 declaring your worldwide income. This includes employment income (Anexo A), capital gains (Anexo G/G1), foreign income (Anexo J), freelance income (Anexo B), and rental income (Anexo F). Depending on your situation, you may also need to declare foreign bank accounts and assets. The filing period runs from April 1 to June 30. Tytle handles all of these filings for you.
The IFICI (Incentivo Fiscal à Investigação Científica e Inovação) regime replaced the classic NHR in 2024. It offers a flat 20% tax rate on qualifying Portuguese-source employment and self-employment income for up to 10 years. To qualify, you generally must not have been a Portuguese tax resident in the prior 5 years and must work in an eligible activity (tech, research, teaching, senior management, or other qualifying roles). Tytle can assess your eligibility and handle the full application.
The classic NHR regime closed to new applicants on December 31, 2023. However, if you registered as NHR before that date, you continue to benefit from the regime for the full 10-year period. The NHR offered a flat 20% rate on Portuguese-source high-value income and potential exemptions on foreign-source income. It has been replaced by the IFICI regime for new applicants. Tytle advises both existing NHR holders and new arrivals on the best available regime.
Portuguese tax residents are taxed on worldwide income at progressive rates from 14.5% to 48%. Foreign income — including salary, pensions, dividends, capital gains, and rental income from abroad — must be declared in Anexo J of your IRS Modelo 3. Portugal applies tax treaties with over 70 countries to prevent double taxation, typically via the tax credit method. Under IFICI/NHR, certain foreign income may be exempt or taxed at reduced rates. Tytle ensures your foreign income is reported correctly and all available benefits are applied.
The annual IRS Modelo 3 must be filed between April 1 and June 30 for the previous tax year. Freelancers must also file quarterly IVA returns (by May 15, August 15, November 15, and February 15). Social security contributions for independent workers are due monthly. IRS payments or refunds are typically processed between July and September. Tytle tracks all deadlines and ensures your filings are submitted on time.
You are a Portuguese tax resident if you spend more than 183 days in Portugal during a calendar year (consecutive or not), or if you maintain a habitual residence in Portugal (e.g., a home that suggests you intend to keep it as your primary residence) at any time during the year. Tax residency triggers the obligation to declare worldwide income. Tytle reviews your specific situation to confirm your residency status and advise on the implications.
IRS Jovem is a tax incentive for young workers (up to age 35) who have completed a qualifying education level and have not been declared as a dependent in the previous year. It provides a partial exemption on employment and self-employment income: 100% exemption in the first year, 75% in years 2–4, 50% in years 5–7, and 25% in years 8–10 (up to specific income limits). This can be combined with other benefits. Tytle checks your eligibility and applies it to your filing if applicable.
Tytle provides a clear quote upfront based on the complexity of your situation. Fees depend on factors like the number of countries involved, the number of anexos required in your IRS filing, whether you’re a freelancer or employee, and whether special regime applications (IFICI, NHR) are needed. You’ll always know the cost before we start. Simple expat filings start from €249.
